Program Descriptions

Gold Panning Lessons

Students learn the art of gold panning using authentic pans and guidance from park staff and volunteers. Each student will discover real gold, fool’s gold, and garnets, and take home their finds in a keepsake vial. Along the way, they’ll also explore the challenges miners faced and the thrill of “gold fever” that drove them.

Poke Program

In this hands-on activity, students create their own miner’s “poke” bag—a small leather pouch used to carry gold. They’ll learn how miners used gold as payment for necessities, how these practices differ from today, and the cultural origins of this craft. Materials and decorative beads are provided.

Wagons Ho!

Step back in time to the pioneer era. Students work together to decide what to pack in a wagon for the journey west, exploring the tools, cookware, and household items needed to survive. Each student participates as we uncover the roles of family members on the trail and the hardships faced during the migration.

Gold Discovery Tour

A guided walking tour (approx. 45 minutes, less than 1 mile) through key park sites:

  • Native American history of the land

  • Sutter’s Mill

  • James W. Marshall and the discovery of gold

  • The events that sparked the California Gold Rush of 1849

If time allows, the tour may also include a visit to the Wah Hop Store and a discussion of Gold Rush-era mining methods.

Junior Ranger Program

The Junior Ranger Program is available for both school groups and individual visitors.

  • Teachers: Download and print the Junior Ranger booklet for use in the classroom or bring copies for students to complete during their park visit.

  • Visitors: Pick up a free booklet at the museum, explore the park, and complete the activities. Upon completion, participants may purchase a Junior Ranger patch for $2.00 at the Mercantile.
